Evidence-based tips and research to help your little one (and you) get better sleep
The womb is surprisingly loud — about 75-90 dB of constant sound from blood flow, the placenta, and your heartbeat. After birth, silence can actually be unsettling for newborns. White noise recreates that familiar acoustic environment.
All frequencies at equal intensity. Sounds like TV static or a hissing fan. Best for newborns — closest to womb sounds. Most widely studied for infant sleep.
Lower frequencies are louder, higher are softer. Sounds like steady rainfall or a waterfall. Often perceived as more natural and balanced. Research suggests it may promote deeper sleep stages.
Strong emphasis on low frequencies. Sounds like deep ocean or rumbling wind. Can be especially soothing for babies startled by higher-frequency sounds.
There's no single "best" color. Try different types and observe which one helps your baby settle. Many sleep consultants suggest starting with a low, continuous sound and adjusting from there.
Based on the idea that the first 3 months are a "fourth trimester" where babies benefit from womb-mimicking stimulation. The calming reflex is strongest during this period.
Wrap snugly with arms at sides. Recreates the womb's containment and prevents the Moro (startle) reflex from waking baby. This is the foundation for the other S's.
Hold baby on their side or stomach for calming (never for sleep — always place on back to sleep per AAP guidelines). The "football hold" works well.
Loud, sustained "SHHHH" near baby's ear. Mimics blood flowing through uterine arteries (75-90 dB in the womb). Match crying volume, then decrease. A sound machine can supplement this.
Small, rapid jiggling movements (1-2 inches). Not shaking — always support the head. Mimics the constant motion of the womb. A swing or car ride also works.
Offer a pacifier, clean finger, or breast. Non-nutritive sucking triggers the calming reflex and is associated with reduced SIDS risk. Often the "finishing touch."
Overheating is a risk factor for SIDS. Dress baby in one layer more than you'd find comfortable.
Even small amounts of light interfere with melatonin production.
Only a fitted sheet. No bumpers, pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals (AAP safe sleep guidelines).
At least 7 feet from crib, positioned between baby and the primary noise source (door, window).
AAP recommends sharing a room for the first 6-12 months.
Many machines exceed 85 dB at max. Always measure at crib level with a phone app — keep it at 50 dB or below.
Never place on the crib rail or nightstand. Minimum 7 feet (200 cm) away from baby's head.
Sounds that cycle, loop with gaps, or have crashing waves can wake baby. Choose continuous, steady sounds.
Machines that turn off after 30-60 min — the sudden silence can wake baby mid-cycle. Use continuous play.
Using sound only sometimes creates an unreliable association. Use for every sleep period for best results.
White noise is one of the most benign sleep associations. Unlike rocking, it doesn't require your presence and supports independent sleep.
Research from Harvard's Music Lab demonstrated that infants relax when played lullabies that are completely unfamiliar and in a foreign language — showing the response is universal and innate, not learned.

A consistent bedtime routine is one of the most evidence-based sleep interventions. Aim for the same routine, same order, same time — 20-30 minutes total.
